Medical Terminology Pages

The Medical Terminology pages are searchable reference pages for medical abbreviations and medicines (both brand and generic names) commonly used in the NHS.

How to search these pages

1. Use keyboard keys Ctrl + F → ****a white box will appear in the upper right corner of the page.

   

   Red circle → your search term. In this example, we searched hb.

   Yellow circle → X/Y, where X is the search term result you are viewing and Y is the number of times it appears in the page. Here, searching hb gave us 4 hits and we are at the second one.

   Green circle → click on these arrows to move up and down the page to find the other hits (you can also use the ‘enter’ key to move through the page).

2. When you type your search term in the box, all matches for the search term on the page will be highlighted in yellow and turn orange when you scroll to the next hit.

*️⃣ One more thing to note…

Some medications are prescribed through a Shared Care Agreement (SCA). SCAs are made between a GP and a secondary care consultant (e.g., Psychiatrist, Cancer Specialist, etc.) when a patient’s condition is stable/predictable enough for the GP surgery to manage the ongoing treatment.

This is important to note for a few reasons:

1. Once the secondary team establishes the medication routine, it cannot be changed by anyone except the specialist.
2. These patients tend to require closer monitoring - many of the medication regimes require blood tests, etc. to keep track of the patient’s health.
3. Not all of these medications are oral - some are injections and may need a nurse to administer them.
4. SCAs can be found in patient notes on EMIS.

In the lists below, medications that are usually part of an SCA are annotated with an asterisk (*****) next to the medication name (first column on the left).

So, to search for a med that’s likely to be in an SCA, use Ctrl+F to search for the asterisk (*****).
